Costco vs. Sam's Club: Which One Actually Saves You More?

The honest answer depends on your basket, your area and which club is closer. Here's a simple method to work it out for your household in one shopping trip.

Quick answer

Neither club is cheaper for everyone. It depends on the items you buy, the prices at your local clubs and the membership fee. Compare the unit price of your top 15 items at both, subtract the annual fee, and check whether a regular supermarket beats both on some items. Costco's Gold Star membership is $65 a year ($130 for Executive). Check current Sam's Club fees, which changed recently.

The 15-item method

  1. List the 15 items your household buys most in bulk.
  2. Record the unit price for each at both clubs (per ounce, count or load), not the pack price.
  3. Add your regular supermarket for the same items. Sometimes it wins on sale.
  4. Add up the annual difference based on how often you buy each item.
  5. Subtract the membership fee and see what's left.
Break-even: membership fee ÷ savings per trip = trips needed per year. A $65 fee with $10 saved per trip needs about 7 trips a year to pay off. More in is buying in bulk worth it.

Clubs don't always win

Warehouse prices are strong on many staples, but a supermarket sale or a big-box regular price can beat them, especially on name-brand household goods. Since neither club matches competitors, checking is on you:
