Price matching is when a store agrees to sell you an item for the lower price a competitor is charging for the exact same product. You show proof of the lower price (usually on your phone) at checkout or customer service, and the cashier changes the price. The item has to be identical, in stock at the competitor, and the competitor has to be one the store accepts.
How price matching works
Retailers price match for one reason: they would rather keep your sale at a lower margin than lose it to the store down the road. For you, it means one trip, one checkout and the lowest price. You don't have to drive to three stores to get three deals.
The process is almost always the same:
- Find a lower price for the exact item at a competitor the store accepts: a local store, the retailer's own website, or an approved online seller.
- Pull up the proof. A live product page, a digital weekly ad, or a price comparison screen showing the store name, product and price.
- Ask before you pay. Tell the cashier you have a price match, or go to customer service. Show your screen. (What to say.)
- They verify and adjust. The associate checks that it's the same item and that the price is current, then overrides the price.
Most of the effort is in step 1. Checking prices store by store is where people give up, and it's the step a barcode price scanner removes.
Price match vs. price adjustment
People mix these two up constantly, and asking for the wrong one is a common reason for a "no." (There's also credit card price protection. See all three compared.)
| Price match | Price adjustment | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose price? | A competitor's lower price | The same store's new lower price |
| When? | Usually at checkout | After you've bought it, within a set window |
| What you need | Proof of the competitor's price | Your receipt |
| Typical window | Price must be current today | Often 14–30 days, depending on the store |
Some stores offer both, some offer one, and some offer neither. That's why the store list below matters. (Full list of stores that refund price drops.)
Which stores price match in 2026
Here's an overview of well-known retailers' general approach. Policies change often, and individual stores and managers have some discretion, so always check the retailer's official policy page or ask customer service before you shop.
| Retailer | Matches competitors? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Best Buy | Yes, 19 named retailers | Matches Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco and other listed retailers on identical, in-stock items sold by the retailer itself. Blacked out over Thanksgiving week. |
| Home Depot | Yes | Matches a competitor's current price on the identical in-stock item. A straight match. The extra 10% "beat" reportedly ended in February 2026. |
| Lowe's | Yes | Matches qualifying local and major online competitors on identical in-stock items. A straight match, with no extra percentage off. Compare with Home Depot. |
| Target | Own prices only | Since July 28, 2025, only matches Target's own lower prices (stores, Target.com, app, Circle deals) within 14 days. No Amazon or Walmart matching. |
| Walmart (US) | Own site only | Matches Walmart.com prices in store at checkout. No competitor ads, and no adjustments after purchase. |
| Walmart (Canada) | Own site only | Ended its competitor Ad Match program in 2020. Now matches Walmart.ca prices in store. |
| Costco | No | Doesn't match competitors, but refunds the difference if Costco's own price drops within 30 days. |
| Amazon | No | Doesn't price match. But Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe's may match Amazon's price. See who matches Amazon. |

7 rules that get your price match approved
- Identical item, down to the UPC. Same brand, same model, same size, same color. "Basically the same" gets denied. Matching the barcode is the most reliable way to prove it's the same product.
- The competitor must have it in stock. Many stores check availability, especially for electronics and appliances.
- The price must be current. An ad that expired yesterday or a screenshot from last week usually won't work. Pull up the live price at the register.
- Use an accepted competitor. Local brick-and-mortar stores and major online retailers are usually fine. Marketplace sellers and auction sites almost never are.
- Avoid the exclusions. Clearance, BOGO, bundle deals, membership-only prices, mail-in rebates and "while supplies last" doorbusters are commonly excluded.
- Expect quantity limits. Stores can cap matched quantities, often at "reasonable household" amounts.
- Ask before the sale is finished. A price match is easiest at checkout. Afterwards, you're relying on a price adjustment policy instead.
Why price matches get denied (and how to avoid it)
Here are the four most common reasons. The full list of 8, with fixes, is in Price Match Denied? 8 Reasons Why.
"That's not the same item."
Size differences like 12 oz vs. 14 oz, or model-number variants made for one retailer, are the #1 reason. Retailer-exclusive model numbers exist partly to make matching harder. Compare by barcode, not by product name.
"We can't verify that price."
A cropped screenshot with no store name or date looks suspicious. Show a live page or a comparison screen that clearly shows the store, product, price and stock status.
"That store isn't a competitor."
A store 200 miles away or an unknown website probably won't count. Stick to nearby stores and big-name retailers.
"That's a sale we don't match."
Flash sales, doorbusters and member-only prices are often excluded. Check the store's policy for exclusions before you ask.
How to price match with your phone (in about 10 seconds)
Checking competitor websites one by one is why most people never price match. Here's how to do it with Price Match Paradise instead:
- Open the app and scan the barcode on the shelf item. No account needed to start.
- See every store's price, sorted cheapest first, with stock status and a "Price Match" badge on stores that match.
- Decide in the aisle. If the store you're in matches, show the cheaper price at checkout. If not, you know where to buy it next time.
After your trip, you can also photograph your receipt. The app finds items you overpaid for and shows where they were cheaper, which is useful when the store offers price adjustments after purchase.
How much can you actually save?
Price gaps on the same item between nearby stores are often larger than people expect, especially on household basics, baby care, pharmacy items, small appliances and tools. Here's an illustrative weekly basket:
| Item | Price at your store | Lowest nearby | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diapers, jumbo pack | $24.99 | $19.97 | $5.02 |
| Laundry detergent, 92 oz | $13.49 | $10.97 | $2.52 |
| Allergy tablets, 30 ct | $18.99 | $14.88 | $4.11 |
| Coffee, 30 oz canister | $12.99 | $10.48 | $2.51 |
| This trip | $14.16 |
Example prices for illustration only. Actual prices vary by store, location and date.
Doing this on just a few items every week adds up to hundreds of dollars a year, without clipping coupons or changing what you buy. If your store also lets you combine a matched price with a manufacturer coupon, you save even more (check the policy first). Price matching FAQ
Is price matching worth the effort?
Yes, if it takes seconds instead of minutes. Checking prices by hand across several stores is slow, but scanning a barcode with a price comparison app shows the cheapest nearby store instantly, so you only ask for a match when there's a real saving.
Can I price match online prices in store?
Often, yes. Many retailers match their own website price in store, and some match selected online competitors. Stores that only match local brick-and-mortar competitors will usually refuse online-only prices, so check the store's policy first.
What do I need to show to get a price match?
Proof of the lower price for the identical item: the competitor's name, the product (same brand, size and model), the price and that it's currently available. A live product page or a current weekly ad on your phone is usually accepted.
Can I price match after I already bought something?
Some stores offer a price adjustment within a set window after purchase if their own price drops, and a few will also match a competitor's lower price after the sale. Bring your receipt and check the store's time limit.
Do grocery stores price match?
It depends on the chain and the country. Some grocers match competitor flyer prices, others don't match at all. Price matching is most common at big-box stores that also sell groceries.
